Day in the life
We’ve been absent. I’m not sure I have an excuse, but we’re back now.
We’ve started to hit a rhythm, and the newness is wearing away. We definitely still have tons to learn, but so far we seem to be muddling along without too many problems.
We recently went from 4 to 6 residents. Which changes the atmosphere of the house drastically. The male to female ratio has swung towards females, raising the noise level and moodiness at Pine. Gideon told me the next time I pick up a new resident “bring home a man.” Ha.
The kids are still enjoying all of the extra attention from the residents. But more residents does mean our attention. They are forever being ornery and making each other mad, as kids do. So far balancing our attention with the kids and the residents is one of the most stressful parts.
So what does a day look like?
On a school day, Nathan and I are up around 6:30 making breakfast. The residents are out of their halls around 7:15 for breakfast. After breakfast they each have their dish jobs (washing dishes, counters, putting away leftovers, and sweeping the floor). The girls have to be out the door by 7:54 and the guys buy 7:57. The kids love to join me at the window and watch them walk to school.
After they are out the door, we get family time and check emails.
Around 1:00 Chelsea, our Assistant House Parent comes (she’s amazing and I definitely feel like I’m more her assistant than the other way around). She starts prepping for supper.
The residents get out of school at 3:15. The have 15 minutes for a snack and then they go back to their room for quiet time. They can nap, calm down from school, do homework, or whatever. They are out of quiet time at 4:30.
If their homework is done they can play in the Rec room (pool, ping pong, darts) or help Chelsea make supper. I occasionally help with supper or play a game of ping pong.
Supper is at 5:30, followed by short devotions. They tend to have activities in the gym with the other houses in the evening. Otherwise we do games or other activities in the house. We’ll make a snack of some kind and then 8:45 they go back to their halls for quiet time.
The weekends are a bit different with no school. With cleaning jobs on Saturday and church on Sunday they keep busy and we follow the same general schedule.
Days are full. Some more than others. There are hard moments and stressful days. But, so far it’s good. :)

Saying goodbye to the boys
