The Holidays

Not surprisingly, it has been more difficult to find time to update around the holidays and now that we are more officially working.

We were on duty much of the week of  Christmas. Keith and Emily were on as well so they spent the night a Pine house and we just came and went.

We had our first time officially on duty December 30, 31, and January 1st.  It went pretty well we think. I’m sure there are things that we did wrong, but overall it went smoothly. It seems ironic, in a good way, that we rang in the New Year with our residents.  2020 will be a year full of growth, grieving our old life, loving our new life, and learning.

Gideon and Aurelia have been sick off and on (mostly on) since we moved here. It’s been rough. Our kids are typically more clingy, and sickness enhances the clinginess. So far one of the most stressful aspects of the job has been trying to watch and interact with the residents while dealing with sick kids. Gideon’s colds always go to his lungs, and he’s gotten used to carrying a bucket around so that if he coughs until he pukes, he can catch it. Also, the amount of puke I’ve caught in my hands between the two of them in the past few weeks is rather disgusting.

Thankfully, Aurelia seems completely healthy again, and Gideon is just dealing with tons of nasty drainage.

One aspect of houseparent life we are already beginning to love, is watching how our children can soften the hearts of the residents.
This resident read Gideon a book.
He just snuggled right up with him.

When so many of the residents are missing the love and affection from their families, it’s so great to see them loving our kids.

Our kids also love all of the extra attention.

A commonly asked question is: How are we doing?
Good! We really are doing well. I’m sure much of that has to do with the amount of prayer we have had on our behalf. We also are still learning and in the honeymoon phase with our residents. I’m sure it will get much harder.

We managed to make 3 trips to and from Illinois without too much difficulty. It was a lot, but I’m thankful we were able to be with family.

Thank you all for your prayers.

In Christ
~Michelle
